I was given this name a couple years ago. I’ve been to China a couple times and it seems that this
name is kind of strange as　Ｉhave to visually depict the first character and then state：
老虎的虎。 I’m aware of the similarity (if mispronounced)，with 爱护。　　Does this
name sound funny to the Chinese? If so, I’ll be looking for another name. So the next question
would be: Is it better to have an authentic Chinese name as a foreigner or to have a
transliterated name?

As a nickname, I think it Ok. But as a formal one, consider a change.
According to the dictionary:
艾虎（1）（动物）fitch (2) cloth tiger filled with mosa (worn by some people on the head
in the belief that it can ward off evils)

ok, so after a search of most commonly used surnames and given names I came up with this
combination:

劉知遠

Afterwards, I googled it and it seems that liu zhi yuan was an emperor for three years, the
founder of the Later Han dynasty.

what do you think?

Great name in itself, but I wouldn’t name myself after an emperor, it looks weird.

Generally foreigners get names that sound kind of like their original name, but follow the Chinese
naming conventions. If you want people here to think of a good name for you, it helps if you post
your real name (for the sound), and what kind of meaning you would like.

Ok, I’m abandoning the weird nickname as well as my late Han reign.

given name: Zack

As for meaning, I think wisdom and perseverence are important qualities.

How about 康哲（kang1 zhe2)
康 is a common Chinese surname, while the meaning is healthy.
哲 means inteligent, big wisdom.

Difference between these versions of a book?

I’m not the type who can read stuff online or on a pda, so I’m looking for a book to slowly read
over a year or two. For some reason I feel more comfortable with a book in hand that I can mark up
with a pencil and flip through while on the bus. I found one that interests me (I’ll planning to
read the English version as well) and I found a bookstore on the internet that apparently ships
overseas from Taiwan. However, they have two versions of the book:

古都 (精)
古都

They both seem to be published in the same year, but I can’t really tell what the difference is
other than the price What does 精 mean beside a book title? My Chinese is not that good yet (but
I’m going to try to read a book, I must be crazy!) and the online Chinese dictionaries have not
been of much help.

I am not a computer guru but I can’t see any reason why you cant.
I downloaded heaps to my ipod from chinese podhttp://chinesepod.com.
However I hired an interpreter interpreter_beijing@yahoo.com.cn.
Violet is a very well educated young woman, she does a lot of work for visiting business people in
Beijing, Shangai & Hong Kong.

I have a Besta CD-900 and I’m very pleased with it. I haven’t used the Casios before but this
seems to have much better features. Colour touch screen, dual SD slots, and a great dictionary. I
got mine for 1600RMB at that bookstore place.

Does the Besta allow multiple syllable pinyin entry when looking up a word, so that you don’t need
to know the first character before looking up the second?

Example: enter just xingqu (no tone numbers), should list two word matches:
兴趣 xìngqù interest
星区 xīngqū constellation

As far as I can tell, the answer is “no.” Sadly, for all my praise of Besta, it’s pinyin entries
are not very advanced. There are two types of entries for hanyu pinyin: 汉语拼音 and
智能拼音. It seems the only difference is that the latter does not require you to input the
tone, whereas the former does. Both only take one syllable at a time. I would also appreciate a
字典 function that lists 词 with both before and after options!

At the very least, you would expect the intelligence of my Microsoft IME entry system!

Some of the newest models do allow this. I was in Dalian in January, and a sales girl demonstrated
this for me. I don’t know the model numbers. As I recall, it was the top two or three models (that
they were selling anyways).

I have a fairly new model, the CD636. I haven’t fully appreciated all it’s functions, so perhaps
it does do it. Anyway, it is a very good learning tool, so I feel satisfied with my purchase.
