No. It sounds no Chinese (Putonghua).

Quote:

郑州气温骤然下跌6℃ 小雨来添冷

From 人民网, which I think is associated with People’s Daily.

Oh but wait, it is from 人民网河南视窗, probably still not north/standard enough.

I’ve found a 2005 academic paper on the temperature over the last 1000 years in China. Press
Ctrl+F and you can find 4 下降 and 1 下跌. According to the paper the writers were/are based
in Beijing but there is no indication as to where they are originally from. And there is a
possibility that the Chinese used in the paper (I haven’t really read the paper) is not as
standard as that used in venerable media like CCTV, People’s Daily etc.

My point remains that you can also use both terms to describe the drop of temperature, not just
the drop of prices. And monto didn’t think it was wrong logically (although what he/she really
said is WRONG).

trien27 -

下跌 = to fall down; plummet
下降 = to descend; go down

both could be used for temperature: One’s Ancient and Middle Chinese [Cantonese, etc...], while
the other one used in Mandarin is Modern Chinese.

The temperature’s going down:
气温下跌 = Cantonese, etc…[spoken mostly in Cantonese, etc...]
气温下降 = Mandarin [written & spoken in Mandarin, but only when written in Cantonese, etc...]

zozzen -

As far as i understand, temperature is fairly new invention in Chinese. It sounds 100% native to
cantonese ears no matter you say “气温下跌” or “气温下降”. If there were weather forcast
in ancient Canton, the broadcaster possibly said “污烟压顶, 瘴气正浓,
乡里无事勿出门”.

But i agree that 下降/ 下跌 sometimes has distinctive difference and can’t be reciprocal.

When the action of falling is expected:
“飞机正慢慢下降”.

When the action of falling is unexpected:
“飞机急速下跌”.

Another example:
“海水蒸发上云层后, 当积聚的水气太重, 会导致雨水下降” (it’s expected and
predictable)

“他从烟囱掉下来竟然安然无事, 据说是下降时遇上空气阻力.” (the action of
falling is unexpected)

Well done! If the plane 下降,you are Ok; if it 下跌,you pray. The same for a lift.

I think it’s good.

I think it is an example where 下降 are not used properly. 下落 should be used here, 下跌
would sound a little bit awkward, but still acceptable.
By the way, this sentence itself is a total nonsense. If the 空气阻力(resistance of the air)
would be the true reason for the result, everyone should be safe in such accidents.

jiehunzheng -

下跌 implicates that you actually don’t want it to decline.
下降 implicates no such expectation.

温度下跌 is not common. But I think it is appropriate for some special occasion. In the movie
“the day after tomorrow”, you can describe it as 下跌 if the temperature declines further.

FYI.

.

it’s just a story from 阳光灿烂的日子, one of the most famous Chinese movie in early 90s.
厚甸甸的煤灰和下降时的空气阻力, 令他大难不死.

The voice quality (to me) was astounding! I tried it with this phrase
“只有认真地学,才能学好中文”

The only thing the demo didn’t do was adjust the speed. Would only talk at speed 5. Anybody got a
full 600 characters to “try”?

My new smartphone (which I promise I’ll shut up about soon) came with Iflytek’s PPC offering,
VoiceBook, installed. Got to say I’m quite impressed, the Chinese TTS is pretty good. English lags
behind quite a bit though, and I’m not really qualified to judge on the Cantonese.

Trouble is that you can’t copy and paste text directly in, so you have to save as .txt file and
then open it. Can’t open word or html files directly.

carlo -

I’m out of my depth, but is it possible to emulate a smartphone OS on a windows PC and run
VoiceBook?

Sinovoice and Iflytek seem best. The Linguatec demo is very choppy, not that easy to follow (at
least for me). I guess you could get used to this style of delivery, but then after a while you
may find yourself speaking Chinese like a robot in a bad SF movie.

roddy -

Maybe something like this? No idea if it would work, but that’s where I’d start.

monto -

I know from my experence of lifetime that, to learn English you cant be a silent one but for
Chinese you can. I was, in the first 6 years at least (10 years if we talk national standard).

What I mean, is that you may be quite fluent in talking, you still have long way to go for written
one. But if you are good at writing, there would be no problem for oral within a few years.

roddy -

So Monto, what’s the best Chinese TTS?

Hey you BNUers, how long does it take on average to get from BNU to Wudaokou by bus? I’ve seen all
the great threads about which buses to take from BNU to different points around the city, but I’m
wondering how long the trip takes. Thanks

I seem to remember it being 20 minutes in good traffic, but more realistically 30 to 40 minutes.
That was a while back though and I may be remembering wrong. I think heifeng does that route
regularly, maybe she’ll pop in.

adrianlondon -

I could cycle it in 20 minutes if that helps ;)

heifeng -

Yes, I take it nearly everyday. Here’s the deal (Roddy is correct actually, but I’ll just add some
details_
on the new 690 it’s pretty quick (20 minutes no traffic) but you may need to walk an extra stop
(or if you are at BNU, you will need to walk south to the bnu stop rather than the tieshizifen
stop) So if you factor in this time you may be bumped up to 30 minutes. However the probability of
getting a seat is much better now than before (during the 726 days)…

(random question: are there discounts for seniors after a certain time in BJ to ride public
transportation? sometimes after 10am or so it’s dinosaur central on the bus…so don’t count on a
seat all the time)

Your other option is the 331 which takes a more roundabout route but will stop at more stops. So
it can be a bit off a toss up, wait for the ‘kuai’ 690 with minimal stops or not walk as much or
get the extra ‘scenic’ route on the 331.

If you are traveling during rush hour (am or pm), the 40 minutes is fairly accurate…unless its a
Friday..who knows then. I’ve spent 40 minutes b/t 2 stops before in the worst traffic. Keep in
mind sometimes you can walk faster than traffic b/t BLCU and Wudaokou. They need to just fix that
road under the 13 chengtie…that stretch is just ridiculous

In conclusion, its not a terrible commute but bring a newspaper and time will fly

roddy -

The 331 also comes along the south end of BNU, so you could get on there and perhaps have a decent
chance of getting a seat – it starts from Xizhimen, so shouldn’t be too full.

Don’t think I ever got a seat on the 726. I’m sure there must be a bus that runs north from
Xizhimen to Wudaokou (more directly than the 331 does), but not sure which one. That might be
quicker as it should be a clearer road, but you’d need to walk to Xizhimen Beidajie.
